A Guide to Shvitzing in NYCs Spas & Bathhouses

This delicious meal was the perfect cap to my afternoon at Bathhouse. My anxieties going into it were social-related—not being sure what to expect upon arrival and how I was supposed to behave within the space. I was fully vaccinated by the time I had my appointment, and felt comfortable spending time indoors (with just a bit of hesitation), and thankfully went after work with a coworker friend (see above for Tilden) so I had someone to talk to. I think my social skills that were lost due to the pandemic are slowly healing, but at the time of my visit, I was still not used to meeting new people. The Wall Street Bath & Spa offers the unique combination of an ultra-modern facility and all the comforts and atmosphere of an Old World BathHouse.

Welcome to Mermaid Spa

My back has been killing me, so I tried the 90-minute massage, which was fantastic. I requested my masseuse focus on my lower back, and he was attentive to my needs. Time flew by, and by the end of the session, I got up from the table and felt like I was floating.

In a converted WIlliamsburg factory, Bathhouse offers recovery focused treatments, three saunas (dry, tropical, and steam), and three thermal pools (cold, hot, thermoneutral). Their onsite restaurant serves Eastern European-inspired dishes that taste especially good post-tub. Reservations and swimsuits required, and advance booking recommended for weekends. This subterranean indoor water spa is located in a beautifully restored historic building in TriBeCa and strives to closely replicate ancient Greek, Roman and Ottoman bath traditions. The unique atmosphere of relaxation is lit by candlelight and offers pools of varying temperatures. Guests are encouraged to journey through the paths at their own place but there is a limited number of people allowed per session.

Day Pass pricing varies based on the day, time and location you choose. 90-minute thermal baths cost $182 per person and there are numerous massage packages available that range from $266 up to $1,358 for a Wedding Signature Wine Experience. Nestled in the East Village, the Russian & Turkish Baths stand as a venerable institution. Established in 1892, this historic space offers a unique blend of old-world charm and rejuvenating experiences, making it a beloved destination for both locals and visitors alike. With so many cool bathhouses in the city, whittling down a list of our top picks was hard to do.

I had achieved relaxation and was able to enjoy myself in the pools and saunas once again. They’d also taken a lot of care to find interesting wines from less well-known varietals and often overlooked regions, so if you’re interested in retoxing after your detox, that’s an option, too. The restaurant staff was so lovely and provided tons of information about what we were drinking and eating, plus answered all of my questions and let me take a picture of a label with a really cool design. When Bathhouse arrived in Brooklyn two years ago, the wellness destination—which offers massages, facials, scrubs, communal pools, and a full-service restaurant—became the talk of Williamsburg.

(The water is VERY filtered.) If doctrinaire silence and void isn’t your thing — and yes, they can be terrifying — they also offer custom sound and light baths to ease you into the world of floating. The different baths here will give you a unique experience which will be different from most bathhouses. Shibui Spa is located within the Greenwich Hotel in  New York, and it is one place where you will get a balance between the traditional and modern approaches to wellness. Also, the atmosphere is calm and charming and you will get a balance between city life and nature. This facility contains two saunas and steam rooms, well-equipped spa, locker rooms, a meditation dome, a movement studio, and a mini fitness centre.

I knew it was a social space, unlike the typical solo spa experience. Our traditional stone heated sauna is built using ancient old world methods. It is heated overnight to radiate intense heat throughout the day. Sweat bathing in cedar saunas has been credited with improving lung function, promoting blood circulation, increasing immunity to viruses and infections, assisting skin rejuvenation and aiding relaxation. Given the many proven health benefits of sauna bathing it might be quite fitting to call cedar saunas "saunas of life." There’s no shortage of unique experiences to embark on in the Big Apple!

They have a restaurant and a juice area where you can enjoy some food before or after your session at the bathhouse. The dim lighting, gentle music, clean environment and the candles placed at every corner of the bathhouse makes the atmosphere calm, relaxing, and peaceful. This spa uses only natural products for their treatment services and you are assured of the best experience. This bathhouse is a perfect place for you to practice and experience private and personal self-care. This luxurious treatment centre is situated in a five-storey building with over 100,000 square feet of space for a luxurious experience.

TREATMENTS

Picture yourself savoring bespoke cocktails in our exclusive Members Club as a VIP Experience Guest, or opt for a couple's treatment for a shared journey of bliss. New York is constantly innovating, so although many of the city’s oldest bathhouses are no longer operating, a variety of new options exist. Nearly all are co-ed, and offer various styles of baths, saunas, and treatments.

If you are booking a treatment, you do not need to also book a Day Pass. This summer, Avenue is exploring the best New York’s spa offerings. Click here to read more from this series — because if you can relax here, you can relax anywhere. Some of these places use contemporary and modern approaches to wellness, while others maintain the ancient traditions of cultures like Roman and Greek.

For the particularly indulgent, there’s a wine bath filled with Ribera del Duero. Though public, Aire feels private since only 20 people are allowed in at a time for one-hour slots of highly concentrated relaxation. Mermaid Spa located in the Sea Gate area of Brooklyn has a reputation for being the best Russian baths in New York. Besides three Russian steam rooms, this bathhouse has a scorching dry sauna, a Turkish bath, two tile pools that are machine-fed with chopped ice and a circular Jacuzzi inside a lodge-like wooden hall. Owners Zina and Boris Kotlyar, Joseph Feldsherov say they wanted to create an environment that was similar to an old style banya in Russia.

One of the newest facilities in NYC, this multimillion-dollar bathhouse is otherworldly. Located in a former parking garage, it offers 3 stories worth of wellness experiences, entirely underground. Bathhouse co-founder, Travis Talmadge, wanted visitors to feel like they were “going into another world and having them forget where they came from for a little bit” [3]. With dramatic interior architecture and moody lighting, it’s an aesthetic experience as much as it’s a wellness experience. What’s better than an afternoon spent relaxing at a wet lounge? This is our pick for get-togethers large and small (like a birthday or bachelorette).

After going through a locker room which also had showers and bathrooms, we went down to Bathhouse’s subterranean amenities. It definitely felt private and removed from Williamsburg upstairs, aside from the rumble of what I assume was an extra loud L train during my massage. From birthdays to bachelorette parties and corporate gatherings, immerse yourself in a unique atmosphere with curated dining options, spa indulgence, and relaxation in our exclusive private room rentals. Much of the same could be said of food halls and venues like Starbucks Reserve Roastery, which function as stay-as-long-as-you-want coworking spaces while hawking expensive pour-over coffee and artisanal pastries. But still, the banya is different from those all-day venues in that the gastronomy is even further removed from the equation. In the midst of the bustle and fast-paced rhythm of downtown, right at the heart of TriBeCa, there is an oasis of tranquility exclusively designed to balance mind and body.

While not technically in New York City, Sojo Spa Club is a worthwhile field trip into New Jersey. Located across the Hudson River in Edgewater, this multi-level complex features countless indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms, treatments, and a food hall with a Korean-inspired menu. AIRE Ancient Baths is an elegant and romantic option in Tribeca, with six thermal baths spread throughout a palatial, candlelit room. Transport yourself away from the city’s frenetic energy with an afternoon devoted to soaking and sauna-ing. Elevated treatment options include exfoliation, massage, wine soaks, and salt rituals. For a slightly upgraded, but still old world-feeling option, go to Wall St. Bath & Spa 88 down in the Financial District.

I tried all of the saunas and pools—both the tropical and dry saunas, and the three thermal pools. I followed the advice of another bathgoer I briefly chatted with and alternated between extreme hot and cold temperatures (15 minutes in the steam sauna and as long as I could stand—two whole minutes—in the cold pool). The extremes felt refreshing and challenging (especially the time that seemed to stretch on forever in the cold thermal pool).

Book your appointment in advance and add a massage package for an even more tranquil experience. Everything was clean, and constantly being cleaned by the staff, so my Covid anxieties were quickly minimized. Every single staff member with whom I had an interaction was so lovely, but the rest of the clientele (besides the two ladies who chatted with me about Wim Hof) was largely pretty obnoxious.
